Vatican bank investigation snares bishop
... The arrest of Nunzio Scarano, identified in the Italian press as a bishop from Salerno, near Naples, comes just two days after Pope Francis ordered a wide-ranging probe into the internal activities of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See — best known as the Vatican's bank — after a series of scandals.
HOLY SEE: Pope names commission of inquiry into Vatican bank
Scarano, who was arrested along with former intelligence officer Giovanni Maria Zito and financial broker Giovanni Carinzo, has reportedly been under investigation for weeks, after his name was connected to a series of suspicious transactions at the Vatican bank.
According to investigators, Scarano paid Zito €400,000 ($520,000) to illegally transport €20 million ($26 million) in cash from Switzerland to Italy. That incident was said to involve the use of an Italian government plane. ...

An in-depth look at iOS 7’s parallax effect
The volume knob on iOS 6 adjusted its reflection as the device was tilted using data from the gyroscope and accelerometer. This sort of realism in UI was unheard of previously, but Apple had had a lot more planned for future versions of iOS.
Apple’s vision for realism in interfaces was finally seen with iOS 7, where UI elements lived in layers at different depths along the z-axis, and reacted to motion differently, creating a parallax effect where objects closer to the eye move faster than ones that are farther away.
Macworld takes an in-depth look at this parallax effect: ...

WH Climate Adviser: 'A War on Coal Is Exactly What’s Needed' | The Weekly Standard
"Daniel P. Schrag, a White House climate adviser and director of the Harvard University Center for the Environment, tells the New York Times "a war on coal is exactly what's needed." Later today, President Obama will give a major "climate change" address at Georgetown University.
"Everybody is waiting for action," Schrag tells the paper. "The one thing the president really needs to do now is to begin the process of shutting down the conventional coal plants. Politically, the White House is hesitant to say they're having a war on coal. On the other hand, a war on coal is exactly what's needed." ..."

Elderly New Jersey couple faces fine over bird feeder
Elderly New Jersey couple faces fine over bird feeder | Fox News
RAMSEY, N.J. – A New Jersey couple is facing a fine after neighbors complained that their bird feeder is attracting too many animals.
Alfred and Annette Rockefeller are scheduled to appear in court in Ramsey on Tuesday. They could be fined $250 to $500 for violating an ordinance that prohibits feeding wildlife.
Alfred Rockefeller is disabled. The 77-year-old says feeding birds is one of his joys.
Town environmental specialist Leo Egan tells The Record newspaper the wire wreath-style feeder filled with peanuts is drawing ducks, deer, geese, squirrels, chipmunks and groundhogs to the neighborhood. The animals are damaging neighbors' gardens.

Something's Funny About Harry
A first-grade teacher, Ms. Brooks, was having trouble with one of her students. The teacher asked, 'Harry, what's your problem?'
Harry answered, 'I'm too smart for the 1st grade. My sister is in the 3rd grade and I'm smarter than she is! I think I should be in the 3rd grade too!'
Ms.. Brooks had enough. She took Harry to the principal's office.
While Harry waited in the outer office, the teacher explained to the principal what the situation was. The principal told Ms. Brooks he would give the boy a test. If he failed to answer any of his questions he was to go back to the 1st grade and behave. She agreed.
Harry was brought in and the conditions were explained to him and he agreed to take the test.
Principal: 'What is 3 x 3?'
Harry: '9.'
Principal: 'What is 6 x 6?'
Harry: '36.'
And so it went with every question the principal thought a 3rd grader should know.
The principal looks at Ms. Brooks and tells her, 'I think Harry can go to the 3rd grade'
Ms. Brooks says to the principal, 'Let me ask him some questions..'
The principal and Harry both agreed.
Ms.. Brooks asks, 'What does a cow have four of that I have only two of?'
Harry, after a moment: 'Legs..'
Ms. Brooks: 'What is in your pants that you have but I do not have?'
The principal wondered why would she ask such a question!
Harry replied: 'Pockets.'
Ms. Brooks: 'What does a dog do that a man steps into?'
Harry: 'Pants.'
The principal sat forward with his mouth hanging open.
Ms. Brooks: 'What goes in hard and pink then comes out soft and sticky?'
The principal's eyes opened really wide and before he could stop the answer, Harry replied, 'Bubble gum.'
Ms. Brooks: 'What does a man do standing up, a woman does sitting down and a dog does on three legs?'
Harry: 'Shake hands.'
The principal was trembling.
Ms.. Brooks: 'What word starts with an 'F' and ends in 'K' that means a lot of heat and excitement?'
Harry: 'Firetruck.'
The principal breathed a sigh of relief and told the teacher, 'Put Harry in the fifth-grade, I got the last seven questions wrong...'

Apple now charting App Store iOS fragmentation just like Google's Android
After first announcing that 93 percent of App Store customers are using the latest iOS 6 at WWDC last week, Apple has added the chart to its public developer site, mirroring Google's reporting of Android users in Google Play.
Apple now portrays the data in the same pie chart format at Google, drawing increased attention to the fact that on iOS, developers need only target the latest operating system. Apple also expects that adoption of iOS 7 will follow the rapid pace of previous releases, due in large part to the company's aggressive efforts to upgrade users and to prepare developers for the update.
Just 1 percent of Apple's App Store visitors still use a version older than iOS 5, released in October 2011. And only six percent are still using last year's iOS 5, the last version supported by the original 2010 iPad and 2009 iPod touch.
Google currently reports that as of June, the largest segment of Android devices are still running version 2.3 Gingerbread (36.5 percent), which was released in winter 2010. Another 4.8 percent use even older software. ..."
Apple's iOS comes from Apple while Android OS comes from each individual vendor. If you have an Android device you are dependent on the vendor for any updates and they don't have to update it if they don't want too and you could be stuck with it. I have an iPhone 4 which is running the current version of iOS and all apps that are available. I don't 'have' to buy a new phone to get the upgrades.

New 13-Inch MacBook Air Runs for 15 Hours in PCMag Battery Testk
Joel Santo Domingo, reviewing the new 13-inch Air:
Road warriors and jet travellers rejoice, we've found a laptop that will last all day and well into the night. The newest Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (Mid-2013) lasted an astonishing 15-and-a-half hours on a battery test that makes most current mainstream ultrabooks and ultraportables cough and die after four to six hours. The fact that the system gives up very little if any day-to-day performance is astounding.
Not bad."

Need a CBC blood test? You might pay $16 at one New York lab – or $117 at another. How about an echocardiogram with Doppler? It may run you $250, or over $2000, depending on where you go.Good info.
One of the biggest frustrations about our current healthcare system is that there is little transparency. Insurance is partly to blame, since insured patients usually just focus on their deductibles and co-pays. But millions of consumers remain uninsured or have high deductibles, and even consumers with good health insurance may wind up paying hefty out-of-pocket medical bills. Consumers with good insurance may also find lower prescription drug prices by shopping around and paying cash.
By collecting and crunching data that is becoming more widely available, healthcare-focused websites aim to make it easier for patients to research healthcare costs, and save money as a result. Here are seven sites you should know about. ...

U.S. publishes details of missile base Israel wanted kept secret | McClatchy
TEL AVIV, Israel — Israel’s military fumed Monday over the discovery that the U.S. government had revealed details of a top-secret Israeli military installation in published bid requests.
The Obama administration had promised to build Israel a state-of-the-art facility to house a new ballistic-missile defense system, the Arrow 3. As with all Defense Department projects, detailed specifications were made public so that contractors could bid on the $25 million project. The specifications included more than 1,000 pages of details on the facility, ranging from the heating and cooling systems to the thickness of the walls.
"If an enemy of Israel wanted to launch an attack against a facility, this would give him an easy how-to guide. This type of information is closely guarded and its release can jeopardize the entire facility," said an Israeli military official who commented on the publication of the proposal but declined to be named because he wasn’t authorized to discuss the facility. He declined to say whether plans for the facility have been altered as a result of the disclosure.
"This is more than worrying, it is shocking," he said. ...It's time we all accept the fact that Obama is an idiot!
